"But, but Papa! I don't -"

"It matters not what you do and do not want, my angel; it matters what I say."

The brunette girl sighed, and lowered her eyes. "Yes, Papa."

She was to be sent away to the city, to live with her aunt. But the city held no charm for her... here in the country, she had friends; her horse; her roses. Her father's reasoning was that she wasn't yet worldy in her knowledge.

"That's my girl. Now, Jaqueline, dear, go gather your things. Your maid will help you to pack. You'll be leaving within the hour."

And so, Jaqueline Martin found herself sitting side-saddle on her horse, bound for the castle town of Raen, where she was to move in with her Aunt Flora. She didn't quite know what she, a mere merchant's daughter, was to do in a city town... especially as she was a country-bred girl. She knew nothing of city life... and the fact that her Papa was sending her here, on her own, didn't help her confidence much.

They traveled along the main road... thankfully, there was no one else along it just now. Her auburn hair fell in soft waves down to her midback, loose, though she had to continually brush it out of her cornflower blue eyes. Eyes that were distant with desire to be back home.

The Prince of Ergi had been out hunting that day. The Prince was a great sportsman, he loved to hunt stag and fowl and boars. Of course for boars he wouldn't use a bow, but rather a boar spear. A boar spear had a bigger head and a thicker pole then a normal spear so it could take the force of a running boar and not snap like a normal spear would.

The prince was dressed in a leather jerkin with a white tunic under it, leather gloves, tan pants and some leather boots. he looked more like a peasant would except for the small crown atop his head that designated him the heir to the throne. His entourage of body guards followed him and his lovely black horse closely. A cart was following them, and it had a few boars in it and a couple stags.

The prince's group had begun nearing Jaqueline on the road to Raen. The Prince saw her and smiled softly to himself, his skin was fair and he had black hair that was about shoulder length. It bounced softly under the crown. His horse meet up with her horse easily and he began speaking softly to her. "Hello m'lady, I am the Crowned Prince Edward, may I have the pleasure of your name?" His entourage had closed around the two of them. "Just ignore them."

Jaqueline's eyes widened as the Crown Prince of Ergi rode up beside her small party. She was glad, she supposed, that she'd put on her best riding frock; a deep green satin dress, with an off the shoulder neckline that bared her smooth, creamy skin, and loose sleeves gathered at the wrist. Her shoes, though they couldn't be seen, were a delicate boots of soft brown leather. The corset under the dress gathered her waist, accentuating her graceful curves.

"Your Highness... I... what an honor." Her voice, soft but melodic, stammered. "Mistress Jacqueline Martin, if it please you, my Lord." Even sitting on their horses, she was shorter than him, as she was sure she'd be standing. She was petite, delicate... her Papa called her his little rose. She stood just at five feet, four inches.

Even though he suggested she ignore his entourage, her eyes flitted from one face to the next. Her own lady's maid, and the horse they had her few belongings on, was trailing a few paces behind them, silent as ever.

"Jacqueline Martin?" Edward smiled softly, "That is a beautiful name." He bowed slightly, taking her hand and raising it to his lips like a true gentleman. "Where are you headed Mistress Jacqueline?" His eyes never left her face as they talked some. "And, it is an honor for me to meet a lady as beautiful as yourself." And beautiful she was, despite her being petite, she was till quite beautiful. The gates to Raen opened as they saw their lord approaching. Edward, despite being a full grown adult, was still the prince as his father was alive and he had yet to take a bride. His father remained in Edson, the capital of Ergi while Eward was the lord of Raen.

A soft blush bloomed across her cheeks, intensifying slightly as he kissed her hand. She'd never... never really been around too many men before. Why should she? She was happy in the country, with her Papa, her maids, and the odd servant boy around the house. "I... I go to Raen. To live with my Aunt, your Highness." At his next words, the blush on her cheeks intensified still further. "Your Highness flatters me." She wondered if he was just playing some game or other... after all, 'mistress' was a common title, meant for commonwomen who had little to their name. She certainly had nothing more than what her Papa might be able to come up with as a dowry; it would amount to no more than a horse or two, a dozen sheep, and perhaps a hundred pounds.

As Raen rose before them, her eyes widened. She'd never imagined there to be so many people here... and the looks she was getting... some curious; others mildly annoyed; still others, downright envious. Those looks were the ones she feared. Envy was a woman's worst enemy... "If it please your Highness, I... I really ought to go search out my Aunt. She is expecting me."

Edward smiled softly again, and it widened once he saw the blush fill her cheeks. "Well, if it pleases you my lady I would like to come with you to meet your aunt, and then you two can accompany me to my home for dinner tonight. We will have boar." Edward smiled softly as he followed her closer before turning to one of his guards. "You, take all but one boar and give the rest to the people who need meat the most." The guard nodded and then rode off with the cart. "Just ignore the people, they are merely envious of you. For your beauty, and for you accompanying the Crown Prince." It was a widely known fact that Edward was a bachelor, and whoever would win his heart, would also win the title of Queen of Egir. "So, may I accompany you to your aunt's house?"

At this, Jaqueline's lips parted to form a perfect 'o' shape for a moment. No sooner than it had happened, however, she recovered herself. "I... I can hardly tell your Highness no, Highness." She bobbed slightly in the saddle, simulating a curtsey. "Though... I am ashamed to admit... I do not know the way to her home. I... have never been here before." She tilted her chin downwards, looking up at him through her lashes.

Finally, her maid spoke up. "I c'n show ye the way, m'Lord, m'lady." She was of even lower birth than Jacqueline, and had had no education. Thus, her language was not as polished. She was a short woman, shorter even than her charge, and round. (She reminded Jacqueline of a potato. All brown, lumpy, and squat. Of course, the young woman wouldn't ever share this with another soul.)

"Well then my good lady, do show the way." Edward smiled softly, keeping his distance a little bit and letting the maid get up ahead of them. "So tell me Mistress Jaquelin, what brings you to your Aunt's home instead of where your father is, as he should be looking for a proper husband for you." Edward's smile had yet to diminish since meeting this lovely young woman. He rubbed the mane of his black horse softly. "Of course, I'm not saying that I regret your father sending you down this way, not in the least bit."

Jacqueline ducked her head at the mention of a husband. It was true... she was seventeen, and it was well past time for her to be married. But her father had always aimed high. "Papa sent me here to... to learn about city life. I have never been farther away from home than the neighbor's chateau, Highness."

The maid bobbed her head in a nod, and took the lead, showing the prince and her charge through the streets to a relatively small home. It was walled in, and generally looked unfriendly from the outside - especially as there were pieces of rusted metal stuck to the tops of the stone barrier.

"Mistress Jaqueline Martin, and his Highness, Crown Prince Edward, to see Lady Flora Charmande." She announced to the gatekeeper. At first, it appeared as though he wouldn't move before noon tomorrow; but then, at the prince's name, the man snapped to attention. "Right away ma'am, miss, Highness."

True to his word, the gates opened immediately, and he guided them inside, down a path. "If it pleases you, you may dismount, and your horses will be taken care of." He announced, sending a page inside to fetch either his mistress, or her head of household.

Edward looked to his men, "You are dismissed men, go to a tavern or something. I trust these people." Edward smiled softly and dismounted from his horse, the guards nodding and going back through the gate. He left his sword and his bow on his horse, the boar spear was with the guards. "Take excellent care of my horse," he smiled to the page and then stood behind Mistress Jaquelin. He smiled softly at her again as he waited for the head of the household or the mistress to come out and greet them.

"May I?" The gatekeeper questioned, and as Jacqueline really didn't wish to tear her dress, she nodded. He carefully placed his hands on her waist, and lifted her from her horse, sitting her on her feet just as carefully. That done, he took the reins of her mare himself, and led the horse away. Now on the ground, the train to Jacqueline's gown was quite obvious. If it weren't for the fact that her father was a merchant, and one relatively well to do at that... well... she rather liked her small luxuries.

Not long after, a middle aged woman stepped out onto the porch. She curtseyed deeply, then rose, smiling. "Prince Edward. You honor my home with your presence. And you've found my niece. I do hope that she caused you no trouble along the way." Her voice was smooth, soft, and hinted at years of practice saying just the right thing. This, then, was Flora Charmande, recent widow of Michael Charmande, second captain of the guard.

"Jacqueline, you didn't mention your aunt was a Charmande." Edward smiled softly and took a bow for Flora. "She did not cause any trouble, I was delighted to escort her home." He smiled once more, "Your husband was a good man and a good captain, the men enjoyed his authority." Edward smiled again, "I hope you face no troubles without Michael here to support you?" Edward straightened up, "I would be honored if you two would join me at my palace and live with me. It would allow me to repay you for your husband's many years of service to me and my father."

Jaqueline curtseyed slightly by way of apology. She'd had no way of knowing that Edward would know of her aunt... but somehow, she felt she should have.

Flora's grey eyes darted between her niece and the prince momentarily, as the prince spoke. He seemed rather more attached to Jacqueline than a mere escort... and the instructions that her dear brother had sent were to find Jacqueline a husband of the highest rank possible. However, her face betrayed none of her thoughts. She smiled softly, curtseying again. "Your Highness is kind, to remember him. He spoke of you fondly..." Live in the palace? Why, certainly. "If you are quite sure our living there will not inconvenience you, Highness, in any way.... we would be honored. Isn't that right, Jacqueline?"

The younger woman couldn't seem to find her voice. Live in the palace? What would Papa say? He'd say take the hospitality given, of course. She nodded, curtseying once more. "As you wish, your Highness."

"Oh no, it would not inconvenience me in any way Mistress Charmanda," Edward said, going the more polite way with Flora. "Why don't you get your horse Mistress Charmanda and we will ride to the castle. I'll send some soldiers down here when we arrive to pack your things for you and bring everything up here." Edward smiled to the page and waved him over, "Bring our horses boy." He then looked back to Flora, "Of course, your staff is more then welcome to come along as well and work at the palace?"

Flora executed another perfect curtsey. "Very well, your Highness. Bide just a moment while I speak with my head of house." She swept back into the house, closing the door behind her softly.

Jacqueline's eyes traveled from the prince's boot to his own eyes; but she didn't say anything. Rather, she blushed and looked away again. So she was going to live in the palace? That in itself was cause to write to Papa immediately... but Aunt Flora would probably advise her to wait, to make sure nothing happened between here and there.

"Very well Mistress Charmanda." Edward smiled softly at her and nodded as she excused herself to go talk to the head of the house.

He smiled softly at Jacqueline as the page brought over two of the horses, the Prince's and Jacqueline's. The page held the the reins to both the horses, so Edward took the chance. "May I help you onto your horse, Mistress Jacqueline. He smiled softly as he held out his arm for her, the sunlight catching him so he looked more like an angel holding out his hand for her to take and escort her into Saint Peter's realm.

Jacqueline blushed softly as he held his hand out to her. "I... I would be honored, your Highness." She gently placed her hand in his, smiling softly. He'd have to pick her up to settle her on her mare (a palomino of the creamiest gold), because without a mounting block, it was near impossible to sit side-saddle. And that was the only way she rode; it was the only way it was proper to ride a horse. And she, though her blood might rank low, was a lady.

Inside the house, Flora was deep in conversation with her head of household; the one servant who oversaw the rest. They were in agreement - she would keep this house as a little vacation home, citing grounds that she couldn't bear to part completely with the house her husband had bought her, just in case he changed his mind and threw them out of the palace.

"I will be the one whom is honored Mistress Jacqueline," Prince Edward said as he smiled brightly at her. His hands went from hers and then grabbed onto her waist and lifted her up with ease. She was petite, but he was also quite strong. He smiled softly at her again as she mounted her mare who was a great contrast with his horse, saying as his was a dark black and hers was a creamy gold. Edward did not mount yet, as he waited for Mistress Charmanda to return.

Jacqueline's blush slowly deepened at his smile. "Thank you, your Highness." She stated quietly, as soon as she was settled, and her skirt was situated to her liking. She didn't want to show her feet, after all. That was highly unladylike. She did wonder, though, why Prince Edward - the Crown Prince, the man who could have any woman he chose, do anything he chose to do - had taken an interest in her, of all people.

Flora returned soon after Jacqueline was settled, and curtseyed once more. "Please forgive me, Highness. I did not mean to make you wait so long." A motion of her hand had her own mare brought to her - a dark chestnut with a black mane and four white socks. She would let Edward bring up the subject of her moving her household entirely to the castle - she couldn't think of a way to do so without seeming entirely impolite or ungrateful.

Edward smiled softly at Flora, "It was no trouble waiting for you," He held out his hand for her, "Would you like some help onto the horse as well?" He lifted her up onto her saddle before going and mounting his steed. "Well, Mistress Chardmanda, how shall we move your house hold to my palace?" The gates opened before him as he started riding onto the streets. He held back some so he could ride next to Jacqueline.

"Thank you, Highness." Flora accepted his offer of help; and was soon settled on her horse. "As for moving my household..." She paused, and let her eyes fall to rest on her horse's ears. "I just can't give up the home my husband bought for me when we were just married. I did ask them to pack up my clothes, and a few of my personal belongings... but the house at large as it is, I'm hoping to leave. I'll just use it to throw parties or other such gatherings."

Jacqueline listened to her aunt talk, doing her absolute best not to look at the people around them. The women, for sure, were sending her looks of utmost jealousy. The men... something else. She wasn't quite sure what they wanted, but that they wanted something, she was certain. At this rate, she couldn't wait to get to the castle, to get away from their eyes. She did take some comfort from the fact that Edward rode at her side, however.

Edward smiled softly at her as they rode on, every body shooting glances at the party, but Edward kept a tight grasp on the hilt of his sword in case any trouble should arise. They were at the castle in no time, all the soldiers were required to keep homes close to the castle as in cases of emergency they could rush to it quicker. It was absolutely beautiful, it had been built out of pure stone with giant oak doors. The iron gates in front swung open, revealing a beautiful garden. "Welcome to your new home" Edward said as he dismounted. He went to Flora and helped her down first before going to Mistress Jacqueline and helping her down. Three pages ran up to take the horses away to the stables. The oak doors swung open for Edward as he walked into the palace. He looked to Limun, a servant, "Find two rooms for these ladies, next to each other of course"
